Olympic cycling facility could open in downtown Winston-Salem

Reported in Triad Business Journal and W-S Journal is that Winston-Salem could be the site for an Olympic cycling facility. Steve Johnson of USA Cycling said “I believe this building has wonderful potential to develop the programs necessary to become an elite training facility, as well as serve the local community and region in general population health and wellness,”

The goal would be getting USOC approval so that renovations could begin by late summer and have the facility operational in 2015, Rick Rauck said. Dr. Rauck is the lead supporter of the Winston-Salem Classic to be held April 18 & 19, its second year.

The proposed space is at 505 N. Liberty Street in Winston-Salem. It’s a 42,000 sf building across from the Millenium Center. Per Mr. Johnson, one of the reasons this site is being considered is “the Southeast has clearly become a fast-growing center for cycling in the past few years.”

For more information, see the W-S Journal article http://www.journalnow.com/news/local/olympic-cycling-site-a-possibility-downtown/article_6bc10b64-b082-11e3-83e3-0017a43b2370.html

More on the Winston-Salem Classic: The event is one of 16 National Criterium Calendar events and one of 11 USA Crit Series professional road bike races in America. The event also is one of only nine National Racing Calendar professional road bike races, and one of only two Union Cycliste Internationale road races for women in the country. There will be $50,000 in prize money.
